I was disappointed to read that Ecuador’s highest court has upheld a libel judgment against the newspaper El Universo. The enormous size of the judgment — 40 million dollars — and sending the journalist and three of the newspapers owners to prison for three years, is extreme and unduly harsh. It is impossible to imagine that this will not have a chilling effect on the press in Ecuador. President Rafael Correa is culpable for pursuing the suit and the settlement. This will not improve life for this countrymen.
This makes me sad not least because Ecuador is one of my favorite places in the world. I have visited several times, and I hope to visit again. The food is wonderful, and scenery is remarkable, and I have always had good experiences in the country. I should like the people of Ecuador to have the government that they deserve and the free, unfettered, unintimidated press that they deserve. For a while, at least, it seems that they will be deprived of this.
